If patience is a virtue, good luck finding a more honorable couple than embryo adoption parents Ryan and Steph Laposky.
They were high school sweethearts, but just barely. Though the two met in ninth grade -when Steph moved to the same Minnesota town as Ryan- he didn’t actually work up the nerve to ask her out on a date until their senior year. The last month of it. Over MSN Messenger.
It was worth the wait. Not only could Ryan and Steph say (with technical accuracy) that they were high school sweethearts, but they turned out to be a terrific match for one another. A few years later, in 2007, they tied the proverbial knot in anticipation of a full life together. Ryan would provide for the family by working as a pharmacist while Steph would become a stay-at-home mom and provide daily care for their bustling brood of children.
Sometimes, though, the best-laid plans don’t work out as we expect. Upon trying to conceive, Ryan and Steph learned they were infertile in 2010. After taking some time to let that diagnosis sink in, they decided they weren’t going to let infertility dash their dream of becoming parents. Ryan and Steph turned to traditional adoption, but after almost two years, nothing had come of the process. How much longer would they have to abide this trial?
Sensing their distress and realizing that Ryan and Steph were tired of playing the waiting game, their social worker directed them to the National Embryo Donation Center. And in September 2015, after enduring five excruciating years of infertility, Steph finally gave birth to the couple’s first child, Levi. “He is a very content baby and he loves to smile and is starting to giggle,” says Steph. “Levi has enriched our lives more than words could express! He is a daily reminder of God’s goodness and faithfulness.”
Soon, Ryan and Steph may be returning to the NEDC in the hopes of enlarging their family through embryo adoption. “We are so thankful for Dr. Keenan and the NEDC!” these new parents exclaim. “There’s so much life in those frozen embryos!” What a joyous time this is for the Laposky family. These high school sweethearts are at last realizing their long-held dream of parenthood. Their home is bursting with the unmistakable and endearing sounds of Levi’s cries and giggles. Because another couple chose to give the gift of life, Ryan and Steph’s days of waiting are finally over.
